The Reporter understands the group relocated to the site after they were evicted from Havoc Park at Westcliff at the beginning of last week.
In March, we revealed another group of travellers had left a camp on the Carvill site in Castle Street after they were served with an eviction notice.
Now, between six and eight caravans have moved onto the site, just three weeks before the Scottish Pipe Band Championships is held at the adjoining Levengrove Park.
On Wednesday, West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) served the travellers with an eviction notice.
Since then, council officers have had to take further action after the group failed to comply with the notice.
A spokeswoman told the Reporter: “Following failure to comply with the notice served on the camp on June 25, the council has raised a court action seeking eviction.” Dorothy Heron, joint secretary of Dumbarton East and Central Community Council (DECCC) says WDC is in a difficult position when it comes to travellers’ sites. Ms Heron said: “We’re pleased the council is taking appropriate action in this instance. There is already a designated site in Dumbarton, which I understand is currently full to bursting, it’s a difficult one.” Dumbarton councillor David McBride, is hopeful the situation will be resolved quicker and easier than the Carvill Site issue was.
He added: “I am concerned to learn travellers have pitched up in Posties Park. Earlier this year I contacted the administrators of the Carvill site to encourage them to take the legal action to evict and then secure the site. “While this took a while to happen I am confident the council will act speedily to ensure a legal eviction as quickly as possible”.
Police Scotland say they are aware of the travellers have relocated to the park.
Community Inspector Neil Smith said: “We will continue to engage with all members of the community.
“However, should any member of the public wish to report any instances of crime we would advise them to contact us on the non-emergency number 101.”
