An ALEXANDRIA man took on five ultra marathons in five months to raise money for a local charity.

Jimmy McKenzie, 59, ran a whopping 168.1 miles in total and raised £1352.77 for Vale of Leven Autism and Asperger’s Forum (VOLAAF).

The Renton-based charity is close to Jimmy’s heart as Cameron, his grandson, was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome in 2013.

His daughter, Suzanne, is now the chairperson having joined the group a few years ago.

Both Suzanne and Cameron have found great support from the centre and its members.

Suzanne said: “We would like to thank Jimmy for his support over the past few months. Both of my parents are heavily involved with VOLAAF and they are amazing. We really appreciate all their help.”

Jimmy ran the Northumberland Ultra on February 23 this year, starting off his challenge which saw him complete the Dark Kielder Skies marathon in March, the Big Stroll Kiltwalk in April, the Tyne Trail Ultra North in May and the Saint Cuthbert Way Ultra in June.

His employer, Chivas Brothers Ltd, generously match funded £500 in support.

Jimmy had intended to complete Highland Fling in April, which is 53 miles, but due to picking up an injury he was unable to complete this.

Due to his commitment to the cause close to his heart, Jimmy was determined to do something and completed the Big Stroll Kiltwalk instead.

VOLAAF runs West of Scotland Autism & Asperger’s Centre in West Dunbartonshire. They host a variety of services which help children and their families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
