PLANS for an “active travel hub” in Alexandria have received a major boost after the National Lottery approved an award of £125,000 to support the project.
The Vale of Leven Trust, which was set up in 2017 and is run by seven volunteers, plans to use the Community Fund cash to recruit staff to enable them to run daily health walks and e-bike runs – at first four days a week, although it hopes this will increase over time.
Spokesperson Janice Ross said: “The main driver for the initial idea was the publication of the social and health outcomes for residents in West Dunbartonshire.
“Most notably, the higher-than-average mortality rate for women in our community was an area of concern and it was felt that a different approach was required to help tackle this.
“Our walks and group-led bike runs will be available to all; however, we hope our innovative approach of using e-bikes will seem more attractive to people who haven’t cycled in a long time.”
The charity also plans to provide basic bicycle maintenance sessions to help residents make sure their own bikes are in great condition.
Ms Ross added: “We’re delighted that the National Lottery has recognised our work in this way.”
