HEALTH bosses have objected to two alcohol applications due before West Dunbartonshire’s licensing board this week.

Officials from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde say plans for a pub in Balloch and a shop in Alexandria should be rejected on public health grounds.

The owners of The Doghouse on Balloch Road want per mission for a licensed area with tables and chairs on the pavement outside the pub, while the owners of the Spar store at 34-44 Main Street in Alexandria want to increase the area available for off-sales of alcohol.

But Dr Linda de Caestecker, the health board’s director of public health, says both applications should be rejected because they are in a “designated area of over-provision”.

The health board's objection to The Doghouse’s plans also voices concern about the effect of an outdoor drinking area on children, particularly as the pub is located opposite a play area.

Police Scotland and Balloch and Haldane Community Council have also objected to The Doghouse plans, saying that there may not be enough room for pedestrians to get past on the pavement.

The board considered the applications on Wednesday June 30.
