A FUNFAIR will be held in Dumbarton at the end of this month after councillors approved a recent application.

Organiser William Keith Taylor submitted an application for a temporary public entertainment licence to host a funfair which will be held at Dumbarton Common from Saturday, April 23 until May 2. During the weekdays it will be open from 4pm-8pm and 1pm-8pm on weekends.

Members of the special licensing committee held a meeting on March 30 decided to grant the application.

However three residents objected to the plans over concerns about potential problems with litter and parking.

The objection which is made publicly available on the West Dunbartonshire Council’s website said:”Parking in Meadow Road for residents can be difficult as spaces are very limited. Parking for families and individuals who would like to attend the funfair will cause even more unnecessary parking.”

Anne Goodwin said: “The residents of Meadow Road have been subjected in the past to extremely negative experiences arising from the presence of the shows on the Common.

“These experiences have included loud music, difficulties in parking, and on occasion severe anti-social behaviour from certain groups attending the shows.

“The presence of the shows leads to an increase in the amount of litters which is to be found in the area. Members of the show staff do their best to tidy up, but even their best efforts do not remove the problem.”

A council spokesperson has confirmed with the Reporter that the applicant gave assurances that any issues that arose during the funfair would be dealt with promptly.
