VOLUNTEERS across West Dunbartonshire have been praised for their dedication to supporting their local communities.

In a motion tabled at the House of Commons, Martin Docherty-Hughes – the area’s MP – thanked volunteers for their contribution to the region through the cost-of-living crisis.

Next week – June 1 to 7 -  marks National Volunteers Week which aims to celebrate the important work done by charities, volunteers, and their supporters.

According to the Volunteers Scotland group, more than one in four of the country’s adult population volunteered in the past year – totaling 1.2 million people.

Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said: “I am proud to represent the communities of West Dunbartonshire which benefit so much from the dedication of local volunteers. 

 “As we mark Volunteers’ Week 2023, I want to put on record my thanks to everyone across Clydebank, Dumbarton, and the Vale who gives their time to help others. 

 “In challenging times, through Covid and the cost-of-living crisis, so many of our local charities and voluntary groups have stepped up to help those in need. 

 “Volunteers play a central role in our communities – from supporting local food banks in tackling food poverty to volunteering as a befriender and helping combat loneliness. 

 “For anyone interested in voluntary work, volunteer fairs organised by WDCVS in Clydebank and Dumbarton are a great opportunity to find out more.” 

Alan Stevenson, Chief Executive of Volunteers Scotland, added: “Volunteers are the lifeblood of Scottish communities, and what better time to celebrate their very many vital contributions than during Volunteers’ Week.   

“In celebrating volunteers and sharing their stories, we highlight the enormous breadth of volunteering opportunities on offer and demonstrate the many benefits – especially for volunteers.” 

Prior to becoming the region’s MP in 2015, Martin Docherty-Hughes spent over a decade working for West Dunbartonshire Community and Volunteering Services [WDCVS].

WDCVS supports and develops local communities and volunteering organisations.
