DOUGLAS McAllister, the new Labour MP for West Dunbartonshire, has been officially sworn in at Westminster.

He was elected as part of a landslide victory for Sir Keir Starmer's party which returned to government for the first time since 2010.

McAllister, a lawyer and provost of West Dunbartonshire Council, received 19,312 out of the 39,584 votes cast in the constituency.

He defeated Martin Docherty-Hughes of the SNP, who had held the seat 2015.

MPs are sworn in by order of seniority, with members of the cabinet coming first before the shadow cabinet, other privy councillors and ministers are then inducted.

Backbenchers are then called in order of service.

McAllister is part of the 335 new MPs to be inducted into the chamber, which is the largest number in modern history.

The number of newcomers surpasses the previous record of 327 in the 1945 General Election.

He previously insisted he would work "tirelessly" for the people of West Dunbartonshire.
