The Scottish Maritime Museum (Denny Tank) is gearing up to mark its 40th anniversary with free entry on Saturday, September 14.

The initiative is part of this year's Doors Open Days celebration and promises an insight into the family-friendly attraction's engaging history.

The museum will be open from 10am-3pm, offering visitors a chance to delve deeper into the life and works of world-renowned Victorian shipbuilder William Denny whose former shipyard stands where the museum does today.

Denny is a highly influential figure in the history of Clyde shipbuilding, renowned for innovative progress in shipbuilding technology.

These include designing and constructing one of the first helicopters and the pioneering Denny Hovercraft.

At the core of the museum is the Denny Tank, a fundamental element for the success of the William Denny and Brothers Shipyard.

Built for testing the power and speed of hulls, this facility is the world's oldest operational model experiment tank and has been entitled as one of the UK's most pivotal transport heritage sites.

Visitors can participate in a wide array of family-friendly interactive games, trails, and fully immerse themselves in what life in a shipyard would have been like.

The museum offers an opportunity to see shipbuilding designs, feel a real wax model, and even test hulls in a mini-test tank.

An array of exhibits awaits visitors, including the Drawing Office and Manager's Office.

Visitors will also see ship models, photographs, and model propellers which took a skilled technician a whole week to cast, fair, and balance before testing.

Additionally, the latest exhibition 'Dream Destinations' will be open for viewing.

It charts the rise of Scotland's seaside resorts and the golden age of steamboat travel 'doon the watter'.

Christopher Woodland, commercial manager at the Scottish Maritime Museum, said: "We're delighted to support Doors Open Days once again.

"In our 40th anniversary year, it's also wonderful to be able to invite everyone along to discover and enjoy the fascinating story of William Denny and his Dumbarton shipyard which once stood on our doorstep."

Doors Open Days is co-ordinated nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust and is part of European Heritage Days. The yearly initiative began in 1990 and is, today, Scotland's largest free festival that celebrates places and stories, new and old.
