A local MSP has hit out at the Scottish Government asking them to 'stop spending millions on failure' as social care waiting times are 'agonising'.

Jackie Baillie, Scottish Labour's Health spokesperson, has said that 338 people in West Dunbartonshire are currently waiting on social care.

The Dumbarton MSP said: “Thousands of Scots are experiencing an agonising wait for the support they need to continue to live independent and dignified lives.

“Every day without support means another day stuck in hospital beds, relying on overstretched neighbours or family, or simply feeling scared and alone.

“In my Dumbarton constituency, I regularly hear from families desperate for the care they need to look after a loved one.

“Rather than spending millions on a failed National Care Service Bill that will not fund a single extra carer, this SNP government must work with local authorities, charities and other political parties to deliver a care service that works for those who need it.

“Only Scottish Labour has the vision to deliver a proper National Care Service to boost care worker’s pay and conditions and deliver the support that care users need."

The Scottish Government say they have invested £2 billion of funding for social care support this year.

Maree Todd, Social Care Minister, said: “These statistics show the fewest amount of people waiting for a social care support assessment this year – a reduction of 12% since January.

“We will continue working with local health and social care partnerships – who have a responsibility to make sure people are offered the right care and support in the right place, at the right time.

“A National Care Service will ensure consistency of care across Scotland.”
