Plans to turn a former beauty salon into residential flats are set to be approved despite a major objection.

An application to turn the first floor of the former Dumbarton Equitable Cooperative Society Limited on the corner of Greenhead Road and Glasgow Road into 3 flats could go ahead despite concerns over flooding by a government body.

The first floor which was formerly an office space turned salon sits above Greenhead Pharmacy, a hairstylist and a cafe.

The proposal seeks to change the use of the first floor of the building from a beauty salon to three flatted dwellings, consisting of two one-beds and one two-bed.

This would result in the remodelling of the entirety of the upper floor of the building, consisting of the nine former treatment rooms and associated facilities.

Under the proposals, each residential flat would have an allocated parking space which is adjacent to the building.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has objected to the application saying the proposal will result in an increased land use vulnerability in an area which is anticipated to be at high risk of fluvial (river flooding) from Gruggies Burn.

They lay out concerns over the amount of people occupying the area overnight and an overall risk of flooding.

Meanwhile, West Dunbartonshire Council's Road Service (Flooding) have made no objection to the proposals.

Council planning officers say the plans would provide effective use of vacant premises and accept there is a risk of flooding but that the flats are on the first floor and concerns are negligible.

The council planning committee will meet on Wednesday, December 11 to make a decision on the application.
