As I recently retired after 25 years as Session Clerk of Cardross Parish Church I was interested to read the article entitled "The Funeral Procession of Robert the Bruce" by Chris Pollock. At that time the boundary of Cardross parish extended to the River Leven and included Renton. The law of the church required that a body should not be removed from the place of death save by licence of his own parish priest and that when he had desired burial in a different place the body must first be brought to his own church and due offerings made, and then carried to the chosen spot. It is recorded that there was paid to the rector of Cardross "for an oblation at the burial of our Lord the King - 20"
